How can you throw a ball as hard as you can and have it come back to you, even if it doesn't bounce off anything? There is nothing attached to it, and no one else catches or throws it back to you.

Yeah of course.. You are right....
To have a ball come back to you after throwing it without it bouncing off anything, without it attached to anything or with no one else catching it and throwing back to you means you simply throw it up...
Surely, due to the law of gravity, when you throw a ball up in the air, it comes back down....So simple as you said , the answer is "When you throw the ball up in the air"....
