The Action Chapel International (ACI) and two other partners have set up a disaster relief fund to support the hospitals and the victims of the fire and flood disaster at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle last Wednesday.
Known as Compassion for Disaster Relief Fund, it has an initial GH¢70,000 and $10,000 made of GH¢50,000 from the ACI; GH¢20,000 from the National Association of Charismatic and Christian Churches (NACCC) and the Whitaker Group.
The founder and General Overseer of the ACI, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, announced the setting up of the fund when he visited the 37 Military Hospital and the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital to pray with victims of the disaster and also encourage the medical personnel of the two facilities who were treating them.
The Archbishop, who is also the Chairman of NACCC, said although no amount could compensate for the loss of life, the fund was meant to alleviate some of the pain.
Donation to the fund will be received at all Fidelity Bank branches into accounts numbers: Cedi -1050031955614; US dollars -195103195618; pounds sterling - 1952031955618 and euro - 1953031955616.
Archbishop Duncan-Williams rallied churches, individuals and public-spirited organisations in the country to donate to the fund to alleviate the pains and sufferings of the victims.
“We felt that it was not just enough for us to be praying for you, but we should come physically to demonstrate our love and compassion and to see how we can work with you in making sure that the victims’ death would not be in vain.
“We care about what is happening to the victims and their families. We pray that the situation will unite and bring us together and we can also prove to the world that we do care for one another.”
He commended officials of the two hospitals, saying, “We have been told of the sacrifices you have made, the pressure you are dealing with and the difficult circumstances you have to work to help the victims and their families.”
The Archbishop who was accompanied by his wife, Rosa; the General Secretary of the NACC, Bishop Titi Offei, and a Senior Pastor of the ACI, Bishop Ebenezer Obodai, later prayed with victims of the disaster at both hospitals.
Addressing the victims, he said the church shared in their pain and suffering and would contribute to support them physically and spiritually.
“We must do all we can to show the world that we do care for one another. And we love each other and that in times like this, we would come together to support the wounded and the most vulnerable,” he said.
He said the church would continue to “lift up prayer and take the necessary steps because the rainy season is not yet over. We want to stand with you and pray that the flood and the storm will be averted and there would not be further disasters”.
Officials of the 37 Military Hospital said the immediate needs of the hospital as far as the victims were concerned, were supplies for dressing wounds and bed sheets.
According to them, given the nature of their wounds, some of the victims of the disaster had their bed sheets and dressing changed at least six times daily.
