One of the Australia’s top spy agency has warned the government to brace itself for a wave of some massive cyber attacks during the G20 summit in Brisbane, taking place on 15-16 of November, 2014.

The Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has been giving warning to business industry in the country that hackers from Russia and China maybe bracing for a cyber attack on country’s infrastructure while the government will be busy facilitating the world leaders.

“Targeting of high-profile events such as the G20 by state-sponsored or other foreign adversaries, cyber-criminals and issue-motivated groups is a real and persistent threat,” the directorate said in its G20 cyber-security advice.

It also revealed that some fake malicious emails related to 2012 and 2013 G20 summits have been sent to Australian government and security agencies in an attempt to steal information, hack their computers and associated networks.

Greg Rudd from Council of Registered Ethical Security Testers (CREST), known for providing security to IT infrastructure in Australia said on Friday that cyber criminals from different countries can attack Australia for different purposed and motivations.

“They would love to just, you know, get into the traffic light system for example and just disrupt that. And what they’re after really is free international media. Hackers also tried to disguise their attacks, making it harder to know from where they originated,” Mr Rudd told the ABC.

The ASD has already issued a cyber security advice (as mentioned in start), educating users about common techniques used by hackers such as phishing, checking emails and their attachments and using their login credential on a public Wi-Fi. The security advice also urges not to accept gifts such as USB drives (which are given as gift commonly during G20 summit) should be avoided as they can install data stealing software on devices.

This is not the first time when a G20 summit can be under a cyber attack. In 2009 cyber attacks affected American/South Korean government, financial websites and news media, or the 2007 cyber attacks on Estonia, the attack that took place during the Paris G20 Summit was not a DDoS style attack. Instead, these attacks involved the proliferation of an email with a malware attachment, which permitted access to the infected computer.

Cyber attacks in France during the G20 summit generally include attacks on websites by DDoS attacks as well as malware. Attacks have so far been to the civil and private sectors instead of the military.
