Apple revealed new software features for its devices. Among them there is Apple File System, or APFS, which is a new version of the technology used by Apple products to save and retrieve data. APFS generally improves the way information is organized and protected in order to make it faster and more secure.
Apparently, Apple moves further to more widespread encryption in consumer technology products after its standoff with the FBI earlier this year, in which it refused to help the FBI weaken its own security processes in attempt to break into an iPhone belonging to a terrorist. Even Apple rivals Facebook and Google both pledged support for the company in that case and announced to be planning encrypted versions of their messaging apps. WhatsApp outrun them all and fully encrypted all conversations by default.

So now developers building software for Apple devices will be able to opt for users’ data to have no encryption, single-key encryption, or multi-key encryption. The company explained that full disk encryption had been available on OS X since version 10.7 Lion, but now APFS encrypts files individually rather than as one unit. Besides, it also encrypts related metadata and will keep it secure even when the device has been physically hacked.

It must be noted that since its battle with the FBI over the shooter’s iPhone, Apple has introduced a number of important changes to increase security and tighten encryption. Now Apple is reportedly considering a system that wouldn’t allow it to access iCloud information either.

Overall, many of the features announced by the company expand security of user data: for example, artificial intelligence is running on the device itself, rather than in the cloud, and anonymizes data Apple collects from its customers.
