Secret arms-trading groups on Facebook advertised revolvers, rifles and submachine guns built or designed in Britain, as well as heavy machine guns, anti-tank weapons, rocket launchers, portable anti-aircraft systems and grenade launchers built in Europe, Russia and the United States. Media reports drew attention of their readers and the company to this fact, calling Facebook “sprawling online arms bazaars”.
The Times said it had reported 7 examples of such suspicious groups to the social network, and Facebook had swiftly and successfully shut down 6 of them. When the newspaper wondered whether the pages advertising British weapons had been removed, Facebook responded that everything that had been brought to the company’s attention and violated its terms and conditions had been immediately removed.
According to the US newspaper, pictures and descriptions of the weapons were posted on Facebook alongside other social media platforms in Libya. The information about their sale was discovered by weapons intelligence consultancy Armament Research Services.
