The Eastern Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Angwubutoge Awuni, has died.

He died at the Police Hospital in Accra after a short illness, police sources confirmed to Joy News.

The Deputy Eastern Regional Commander, ACP James Abass, said he was transferred to the Police Hospital, from the region.

He had been on admission for a few days before he was transferred to the Police Hospital where he died Sunday.

He was recently transferred to the Eastern Region as Commander by Inspector General of Police, John Kudalor.

He had been heading the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service.

The late Awuni was known for his honest and frank talk and had several brushes with political authorities.

ACP Abass Mr. Awuni "was an exceptional police officer; his conduct, his idea of honesty and his idea about policing was quite different any other person and he spoke his mind else; he fought corruption with all is zeal and it didn't matter whose ox was gored; Awuni would put it bluntly to you when you were wrong."

The police PRO said the entire Eastern Regional was devastated by Mr. Awuni's death because "in his brief stay with us here, he introduced his dynamism, his frankness, his utmost honesty that he is noted for and these had an impact on all of us here."

The police command in the region is shocked by the death, Mr. Abass told Joy News' Manasseh Azure Awuni.
