The Akyem Swedru Circuit Court presided over by Mr. Emmanjel B. P. Brew has bonded two persons involved in a chieftaincy dispute in the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area in the Eastern Region to be of good behaviour to keep the peace.
They two who belong to the Attafuah Royal Gate have also been restrained from proceeding with steps to change the status quo until the determination of the destoolment case atvthe Judicial Committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs or in default pay GHC 50,000.00 each.
They are Abusuapayin Emmanuel Ofori -Atta and Okyeame Kwabena Gyamfi.
The two accused persons on May 24th, 2015, which was an Akwasidae, a day set aside by the chiefs and elders to pour libation and offer sacrifice for the stools, slaughtered a ram to signify the dethronment of the Paramount Queenmother of the Akyem Kotoku Traditional Area, Nana Akua Asantewaa III.
In a motion on notice for application to keep the peace, the Akyem Oda District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police,Mr. Mohammed Issah Cantona, told the court that,for some years now the two main gates to the paramount stool, namely,the Attafuah and Frimpong -Manso Gates had been at each others throat as to who becomes the Paramount chief.
The court heard that some of the reasons which influenced the action of the two accused persons werethat the queenmother has wrongly declared the Anyinasehene, Osabarima Owusu Gyamafu III, as member of the Agona Royal Familyand further elevated him to the status of Abusuapayin of the Royal Family, which to them was considered as a sti king violation of their customary order
The queenmother was also among others, accused of elevating herself to the status of a paramount Chief thereby disposing of stool lands and playing other roles that were exclusively reserved flr paramount chiefs, and also she has neglected and reneged on all her roles as a queenmother and abandoned the Royal Family.
According to DSP Cantona, police intelligence revealed taht Abusuapayin Ofori -Atta led faction had vowed to knstall a new queenmother for the traditional area at all cost in a very shortest possible time with the nomination and installation of a new paramount chief.
The development threatened to lead to mayhem between the Abusuapayin Ofori -Atta led faction and and the queenmother's suporters if pre -emptive measures such as ordering Abusuapayin Ofori -Atta's faction to enter into a bond to keep the peace and also be restrained from installing a new queenmother so as to create congenial atmosphere in the traditional area.
The court after listening to DSP Cantona granted the motion.
