The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II says challenges to land management will continue to bedevil the country unless personnel of land administration institutions change their attitude to work.
He said lack of enforcement of land laws and policies, poor and uncontrolled developments are also to be blamed land management challenges in Ghana.
“It should be emphasised that it is not the building that will streamline land administration in the country rather it is the attitude of the staff of the lands sector agencies.” Asantehene said.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II was speaking at a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a modern office for the Lands Commission and allied agencies in Kumasi.
The office complex project, when completed in fifteen months, will house the Lands Commission, Office of the Administrator of Stool Lands as well as the Town and Country Planning Department.
It is being financed by the World Bank at the cost of 22.5 million Ghana Cedis under the Ghana Land Administration Project (LAP 2).
“If the attitudes of the staff do not change then we should continue to expect the challenges outlined in the 1999 National Land Policy Document”, the Asantehene said.
Poor records keeping, multiple sale of lands, the many and conflicting landlords, and lack of title documentation and security of lands are some of the challenges outlined before the land administration project began.
According to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, managing the country for what he describes as generational needs require workers to adopt positive attitudes to effectively streamline land administration system.
Lands and Natural Resource Minister, Nii Osa Mills, says improved infrastructure is critical in transforming land administration in the country.
