We've all been in situations were we want to copy an 8gb file onto a USB flash drive but we couldn't. What makes it more painful is you'll be having 2 4gb USB drives but can't copy the 8gb file on both.
You can use Winrar or HJSplit to split the file into several chunks or parts and copy each half to the 2 drives and merge them again on the computer you want to use the file on.
It not only splits but compresses the size of the file in the process.
Here are two methods to split a large file into several small files:
Method 1: Using HJSplit
1.Download HJSplit:here
2.To start splitting the file using HJSplit, Click on the Split tab on the main window .
3.Now provide HJSplit with your Input(Locate to your file which you want to split) and Output(Locate to where you want your split files to be placed) destinations and enter the desired maximum size of each chunk of file.
NB:1024MB=1GB
4.Now click the start button and wait for a while till the file splits into smaller chunks.
5.Copy half of the Chunk files onto each USB drive. For example if you split the 8gb file into 500MB parts you'll have to copy the first 8 500MB splits onto the first drive and the next 8 on the 2nd drive
To start Joining you files, follow these simple steps.
1.Click the ‘Join’ button in the main HJSplit screen, you will see the following screen:
2.Make sure the set of split parts (set of files ending in .001, .002, .003, etc.) to be joined are all copied to the same folder. Click on the button ‘Input file’, in the screen directly above.
3.Click Input and Locate where you kept the chunked files and Click on the .001 file. HJSplit will automatically find the rest during joining.
4.Click Start to merge them into 1 file.
Method 2: Using WinRar
1.To start splitting, Right Click on the file that you want to split, choose the option Add to archive
2.WinRar automatically assigns a name for the new archive it is going to create. If you don’t want a default name, you can change it as appropriate.
3.Under the option Split to volumes, either enter the desired maximum size of each file chunk or choose an appropriate size from the available drop down option. In my case I entered 5 MB for each chunk of file.
4.Click Ok and wait for few seconds. WinRar compress the source file and splits it in to several files.
5.Now copy half of the Chunk files onto each Flash drive.
6.To merge them make sure the splitted files are in the same folder. Then right on the first part and click Extract.
