One of the largest ISPs in the country has pledged to ensure every home in the United Kingdom has a minimum standard of access to the worldwide web. BT also promised to accelerate its rollout of faster connections in respond to heavy criticism over its dominance of the British broadband market.
BT’s CEO recently called for industry and government to cooperate and create a supportive regulatory and policy environment in order to provide people with faster and more comprehensive broadband coverage. The local watchdog, Ofcom, confirmed that it is currently carrying out a review into whether the BT’s Openreach division, responsible for operating the cable network, should be spun off. BT promised to provide every household in the country with connections of at least 5-10Mbps and offer 10 million homes and small businesses “ultrafast” speeds of 300-500Mbps in the next 5 years. The company was also going to supply fiber broadband to all new housing developments and offer satellite broadband coverage for remote premises.
It should also be noted that BT will enjoy the most of £1+ bn the British government is spending to encourage broadband rollout across the country. In respond, BT has promised to return some of the funds in areas where fiber broadband take-up exceeds 20%.
