Glo attributes huge data subs gain to network upgrade 15833499_808085

Glo Mobile Ghana says the recent increase in its data subscribers by over 1.4 million in just one month is because of network upgrade that resulted in a 42mb/sec download speeds on its network nationwide.

"We have upgraded our network to 42mb/s download speed nationwide," the company said in response to a questionnaire from Adom News on factors leading to the unprecedented increase in its data subs.
Indeed, great customer experience, when it comes to data, is largely about download and upload speeds, and Glo Ghana Head of Business, Akeem Kazeem said Glo offers the best of that nationwide.

The most recent mobile data statistics published by the National Communications Authority (NCA) indicated Glo made the biggest gains in the mobile data market with a whopping 1.4 million plus additional data customers in just one month.

"Glo finished January 2015 as the highest subscriber gainer with 2,091,600 subscribers as compared to the December 2014 figure of 668,424. Their market share at the end of the month under review was 2.48%," the NCA report said.

Meanwhile, Glo has not been very impressive on the voice market. Its voice subscriber base saw a marginal decline from 1,450,382 to 1,438,929 over the same period, indicating a decrease of 0.78%. This pushed their market share to 5.17%.

Clearly, Glo has more data customers than voice customers; at least 652,671 more. However, Kazeem said Glo's voice service is also superior, but customers are getting more sophisticated and therefore opting more for its data services than voice.

Within last year, Glo saw marginal increases to its data subs month after month like every other telco did, but in the last two months before the close of the year it actually recorded some decline in data subs.
Between October and November, 2014, it's data subs dropped from 680,000 plus to a little over 672,000; then it dropped further to 668,000 plus in December 2014.

So the huge increase between December and January, just after two consecutive months of decline, has stunned industry watchers.
Very often, smaller players have not been able to maintain their gains over the long term, but Kazeem is optimistic Glo is poised to maintain its winning ways on the data market and continue to add more voice and data customers going forward.

"We are positioned to maintain more than these customers over the long-term as we are continuing the upgrade and expansion of all our facilities nationwide. We have still not reached our optimum capacity, and as the latest entrant in the market we have huge potential in terms of Network Capacity and Quality," he said.

Kazeem noted that data subscribers are fast growing across networks largely because customers are getting more sophisticated and are adopting smart devices, adding that currently Glo, for instance, has a data to voice customer ratio of 1:5 and they expect that to grow significantly over the year, on the back of its various value offerings.

"We believe we offer the best voice and data services in the market at reasonable and competitive prices," he said, adding "Glo Kappah, for instance, is one of the best products available in this market and it is gaining huge popularity and doing good."
Other telcos
But it would appear other regular data subs gainers like MTN lost quite significant numbers of subs as Glo gained. MTN lost at least 258,596 data subs over the periods under review while Expresso also lost more than 32,000 of its 37,000 data customers within the period.

Tigo also gained quite significantly on the data front on the back of its "drop the yam" promo. The telco gained more that 165,000 new data subs over the one month period.

Vodafone also gained over 84,000 additional data subs on the back of its Red packages, while Airtel also gained over 25,000 new data customers over the period.

Meanwhile, total data subs across networks stood at over 17.2 million representing about 56% of the total mobile cellular subscribers in the country.

Am not surprised at this revelation by any means. I have realized that there is a vast difference in the speed between their pay as you go service and their bundles. But seriously, they Made this Significant upgrade without creating the awareness of the public,? that alone could have trippled the number of subscribers they would have got. Also if this was Really made, we should have seen at least a little upgrade in the speed of their pay as you go service, but its yet to reflect. We are in an era were everyone craves affordability, but quickly follows it up with quality. GLO is Still short in both areas.

If this is true, then it's been too long in coming. Bandwidth capping is a problem to many broadband subscribers. The more the service providers have to give their customers, the better. They always throttle the speed they offer to their customers because of the numbers involved. The others should take a cue from them.

This is a welcomed news, finally something worth befitting for a Ghanian, the speed of glo is still crap compared to other networks and now this major upgrade. Now  it comes cost and capitation on data, thats one thing all the networks have fail to win the peoples heart. Glo data is very expensive just like the ISPs. They should reduce the prices and also start unlimited packages according to speed.. why not sell speed instead.. am sure i can even device a better plan on that situation.... THEY SHOULD DO MORE

Twisted Evil But they are more into advertizement than more customers,  scratch I kinda wonder if they were an advertizement Agency or company....

Just What I was saying. A market defining upgrade like the one stated above should have been given more exposure than What they did. Compare this to the way vodafone and Tigo does their business and you realize that Glo needs to back up.

As for me, i never would ever praise any of our ISP's for any speed or whatever they provide to us until when they start to provide us with unlimited services whereby we would pay according to the speed we want. PERIOD.
We bundle at expensive prizes and browse for less, how do they expect us to also be watching YouTube videos and so on or even download movies without having second thoughts that our data bundle would get finished.
They should provide us with better services and stop the tricks they are playing on us to get our money bit by bit... lol

is true brother, they will bring some thing up just to convince the consumer but they should take that into mind that
now in Ghana we need more speed and unlimited data to be able to do a lot not this caped things that they have being doing .
anyway is a good thought of glo to do that upgrade and it should have reflected in their speed to win more customers

study The ISPs are the once producing or manufacturing the data. they should thing of them self as Data companies which they are, and do the right thing.. too many data plans as if they are schooling us, even within the glo network itself, they are so many data and call plans that a customer will never get to hear of, too much waste of money on advertizement,

Shocked its not stupid enough to force customers to lean data plans and also charge them high prices when they subscribe to the plan.. how about a single plan for his customers on unlimited packages and use speed as the basics of selling the plan, that would be more profitable than having about 5 to 20 plans and also wasting money to advertize them. they also expect you, expect your customer to learn them all and select what best for you. Is that a data plan school or what?  They should back and do the right thing.

Yea admin, its just unfortunate that most of us haven't realized the services they provide to us is just nothing but a way of getting more money from us than thinking about our welfare.

its sad all the ISP's know we need unlimited services but they wont bother about how to even provide us with any.
We wish by 2017 we start to enjoy the best from them..
