Not all SHS graduates are cut for tertiary education – GES boss

The acting Director of the Ghana Education Service, Charles Aheto Tsegah, has revealed that it is not automatic that all students who graduate from the Senior High School (SHS) would make it to the university.

According to him, students participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for diverse reasons and they must be given the opportunity to exercise their right.

“It’s not a matter of all students sitting for the exam should progress into tertiary institutions,” the acting director said.

A report by the West African Examination Council, (WAEC ) stated that 70% of candidates who wrote the WASSCE for 2013/2014 academic year failed to make the required grades for entry into tertiary institution.

WAEC’s revelation has ignited public outrage with many demanding answers from the state agencies responsible for education.

Speaking on Citi FM’s eyewitness news, Mr. Tsegah blamed the low pass rate on what he described as the challenges in the education sector.

He however called for drastic measures to be put in place to focus on improving the teaching and learning of core subjects – English, Maths and Science.

4 years is better than 3

4 YEARS or 3 YEARS, they are the same. I see the four years to be waste of time and money. In the four years era, they only offer core-subjects such as:
MATHEMATICS
SCIENCE
SOCIAL STUDIES &
ENGLISH
during the first year. Why on earth would you have to offer four subject for a whole year then after that, you combine it together with the elective subject whilst you could do all from scratch without wasting time and money.
After all, didn't the 3 year batch and the 4 year batch all write the same exams last year? Is it only the four year students who passed for tertiary institutions or the 3 year candidates also passed too? In my opinion i prefer the 3 years rather than the 4 years.
Its just about how serious you are about your education and how determined too.
