Police not clean in fraudulent recruitment - Security analyst suggests 836044887805_8376894376188

Security analyst Prosper Nii Addo suspects police complicity in the weekend’s fraudulent police recruitment exercise.

He is therefore advising that the police administration begin enquiries into the fraud from within the service to root out insiders collaborating with the fraudsters.

Nii Addo told Joy News the need for a comprehensive look into the issue stems from previous robbery and other criminal activities where the criminals are found to be using accoutrements supplied by security personnel.

With the forgery of a top police officer’s signature on the fake recruitment letters, he said those arrested could be fronting for powerful police officers.

“I would not be surprised to hear some key names” mentioned by those apprehended, he said.

Prosper Nii Addo also believes the police should not be left alone to investigate the fraudulent exercise, suggesting that the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defence and Interior should be involved at key stages of the investigation.

For the sake of the police administration’s own image, the security analyst said any investigations should be targeted at weeding out the bad nuts within the service as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the ranking member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, Major (rtd) Derrick Oduro told Joy News the involvement of some police officers cannot be ruled out.

However, he said the committee expressed confidence that the police administration will not shield any officer found to be involved in the fraudulent recruitment exercise.

So far about 14 people have been arrested in connection with the fraudulent exercise.

I totally agree. No one would even dream of having the vim to carry out such activity. If they are really serious about curbing this they should look at the powers behind the scenes. Some top officials are definitely involved. Only that the civilians get arrested and they go scotfree.

Politics to blame for Police recruitment fraud - GII
Executive Director of anti-graft agency Ghana Integrity Initiative, Vitus Azeem, has blamed the recent police recruitment scandal partly on the overbearing political interference in the selection of personnel.

Mr Azeem notes that the situation goes beyond the police to include other security services.

"You recall sometime ago a minister [and parliamentarian] came on air to boast of having brought 150 people from his constituency into the Immigration Service. So these are things that happen. Just that this time it is on a larger scale than has been happening", he said.

According to anti-graft campaigner political interference in the recruitment of persons into the security services has been difficult to tackle because "people talk about it in private but if you ask them to come forward and say it they wouldn't want to do that".
Mr. Azeem also says those enlisted into the security services through the backdoor often end up becoming corrupt personnel.

Hundreds of prospective recruits from different parts of the country were recently left stranded after it emerged letters directing them to report at different Police Training Schools were fake.

Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration and Human Resource, Patrick Timbillah, has been interdicted in connection with the recent recruitment fraud as investigations continue.
