I was trying to install a custom rom on my phone yesterday. I made a backup of my system using the phones recovery mode. After that i tried installing the rom, but i was told that i can only install the rom with clock work Mode (CWM) installed on my device. So i installed the CWM and went ahead to install the rom. As it turned out the rom was not compartible with my phone so the phone started bool looping (freezing at manufacture logo). Sensing danger i went back to restore my old operating system using the backup i made earleir only to realize that i couldnt install it. That was because i made the made the backup using the recovery mode of the stock rom and as such CWM could use that backup. Now am stuck with a soft bricked phone.
I have a few choices.
1. Get CWM out of the phone and use the recovery mode of the stock rom to restore my system.
2. Install a compartible custom rom on my phone and take off from there.

Can anyone help me out with a way that i can get back to the recovery mode of my stock rom or better still how to remove clock work mode from the phone.

Or alternatively a custom rom that will work with my phone. Am using a mediatek device and after searching for some time i have realised that there are very few roms out there that actually work with mediatek devices. If anyone can suggest one for me, i would be very grateful.

PHONE:
Mediatek 6572
Viwa max running on android 4.2.2

I can understand how you feel right now. I have been there myself. I'll try to provide a few options for you to try.

Basically, the general rule when it comes to custom ROMs is as follows:

1. Root phone.
2. Flash custom recovery
3. Backup current ROM (with recovery)
4. Flash COMPACTIBLE ROM.
5. Reboot....and you are good to go.

However, that is not always the case. Problems could arise if the installed ROM is not fully compactibe, or is the process is aborted (for instance due to low battery level).  My point here is that there are risks that come with using custom ROMS.

You are actually fortunate you have a soft brick and not a hard one. there is always a way out.

MY OPTIONS FOR YOU:
I actually have three options for you. But lets work step by step.

1. Try rebooting into recovery mode. There are different key combinations for booting into recovery mode in different phone. For MediaTek try Volume up + Power. Once youget to the recovery mode you could reset the phone and restore the backup image you have on the phone.

A missing boot image after flashing could be the cause for the boot looping you are experiencing. Make sure to flash the boot.img file after installing the rom. You can extract that from the ROM file.

Your feedback is very important. Let us know what happens so we can explore the other options. No need to panic at all. Just find another phone to use for now.

Thanks for the response @WhIPL4$h . But i have done that several times. the problem is that the current CWM does not detect the backup although its there. But when i put any rom in the sd card it detects it.

Looks like CWM is not finding it because it's in a different location. Step 3 above is done using Clock Work Mod recovery and NOT the stock recovery. CWM backups are located at /sdcard/clockworkmod/ backup

Try copying the backup to that location and check if it sees it. is. Mount as USB drive from CWM. Or you can do that from CWM if it allows you.

That is exactly my problem. I didnt do a backup with cwm. The only backup i did was with the stock recovery. I saved it in the downloads at first but later moved it the clock work mod folder in my sd card but still it is not detected. This is the name "userdata_20150223_091803.backup" and even my 7zip and winzip of the pc cant open it. I was looking at the possibility of converting it to a zip file and installing it like a new rom.

OK. Then you have to flash back the stock recovery. Then proceed to Restore.

OK. I get it. You need the scatter file to do that. It is usually done with SPL tools. But no problem. i have manged to find one for you. I hope it works. You can download it from HERE

Also download SP Flash tool

Then the DRIVERS

Make sure that you have MediaTek DA USB VCOM drivers installed.

1. Open SP Flash Tool, then click Scatter-loading button to load the correct scatter file
(MT6577_Android_scatter_emmc.txt) for your device and ignore any message that may appear.

2. Turn off your phone, remove the battery and replace it after some seconds (and don't turn on the phone).

3. Deselect all parts except the Recovery and then Download button (or F9).

NB: Selecting all is only done when restoring the full rom.

The tool will immediately show a warning because not all parts are selected, but you should continue anyway. Safely press Yes to continue.

DISCLAIMER: I have to say this process is quite risky and has the potential to hard brick the phone. I take no responsibility for that. You could also just download another compatible rom and flash it; and forget about the stock.

I tried it out today. But it stood at the download part for over 30 mins without starting. I created a different scatter file of my phone using MTKdroidTools but it also did the same thing. I guese i will just have to look for a working custom rom.

I still havent found a compatible custom rom to install on it. But there is a new development. When i created a new scatter for flash using mtk droid tools, the sp flash tools detects it and downloads the recovery as in the images you provided above. But when i boot into recovery after that the cwm still pops up although i see signs that the stock roms recovery was about to load. What could be the cause?

You are right @ whiplash. I have learnt a lot from this experience that makes believe it was a blessing in disguise. These scatter file loading, Read back and most importantly porting of roms were previosly too technical For me, but I learnt it in a few weeks without even realizing. I have sucessfully ported three different roms, but the one I posted is the best. I couldnt have done it without your guidance, I deeply appreciate it.
