The Goil filling station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, where scores of people perished due to the explosion on June 3, has become a tourist attraction.

Since the incident occurred, many people from far and near, have been trooping to the disaster area which has been cordoned off, to see the damage caused.

The place has been designated a ‘disaster zone’ and people are compelled to view the station from a distance.

When the Times visited the area yesterday, many people had gathered under the flyover being constructed at the place, watching in amazement.

A few who spoke to the paper said they had not lost a relative, but were moved by the magnitude of lives lost to sympathise with the victims and relatives.

Helena Mensah, who claimed to have come from Ashaiman, said she decided to come to observe the real scene, after watching the footage on television.

Meanwhile, the area’s blockage has resulted in a huge vehicular traffic from the Circle towards Accra, since vehicles were being directed to take a detour through the ‘one way’ used by motorists heading towards Circle from Accra.

Quite unfortunate incident. The Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) in a recently held press conference mentioned that all the necessary safety measures have been put in place at their outlets. I don't completely blame GOil for the accident. It could have happened anywhere else because of the flood waters.

Again, the public reaction is expected. People are generally freaked out and most don;t want to have anything to do with GOil. That as well could be the reason for the dip in sales. But I believe it will die down with time.

Well certainly such an incident like that with the kind of damage caused would definitely become a tourist attraction... Someone will definitely want to see it with his/her own eyes before he/she can become satisfied or okay with what has/she heard or saw on the television...

Its rather unfortunate for the GOIL company to been hit with such a damage which has lead to so many lives lost.... I hope that the Oil Marketing companies would live up to their words and put measures in place at their outlets so that such a disaster won't happen again... I think that's what is most important now...
