President John Mahama has rejected claims in a section of the media that the power crisis facing the country would end if the government can get money to buy light crude oil to power the country’s power plants.

Speaking at the 2015 National May Day parade held at the Independence Square in Accra, President Mahama said the lack of money for light crude was not to blame for the crisis.

According to him, power plants at the Aboadze Thermal Plant have been running on light crude oil for the past two weeks due to a shutdown of the Atuabo Gas Plant for maintenance.

He said thermal plants in Tema - with the exception of Asogli - were also running on light crude oil.

The President reiterated his commitment to solving the crisis, saying: “We are working to strategically and permanently fix the generation shortfalls that we are currently experiencing.”

He said Ghana would not manage itself out of the crisis, but will find a lasting solution to it.

“Our power supply challenges are temporary and we will soon consider them to be a bad nightmare from which we have awoken,” he noted.
